Scene 6 – Set 5 (Mike’s Club “HATS”) – Song #8
It's 8:00 in the evening at the club. The scene opens with MIKE, JENNY, TOM and STEVE on stage, with Mike speaking to the audience.
MIKE
Hey folks. I want to make an announcement. Jenny and I are getting married.
The audience cheers. Mike prods Jenny to speak.
JENNY
We'd like to perform a song we wrote together. It's called, “Cross Your Heart.”
Mike, Jenny, Tom and Steve begin to perform. Song #8 – “Cross Your Heart” begins.
JENNY
When I was young, I had my life all planned out.
One day I'd meet my dream come true.
Two kids, a white fence, a little house.
We'd stroll through life like lovers do.
I recall the first time I looked into your eyes.
I saw my knight in shinning armor in disguise.
JENNY & MIKE
You say you will cherish me.
Nobody else will have your heart.
You say you will care for me.
You say that we will never part.
Cross your heart.
MIKE
When I was young, I had it all figured out.
Love for me was just a game.
To settle down was not what I was all about.
I thought girls were all the same.
I recall the first time you looked into my eyes.
I couldn’t wait to cast all my rules aside.
JENNY & MIKE
You say you will honor me.
Nobody else will have your heart.
You say you will stand by me.
No matter what we’ll never part.
Cross your heart.
Jenny and Mike dance together during the instrumental.
(Instrumental)
They are speaking with each other but the audience cannot hear what they are saying. They kiss just before the lyric begins again.
JENNY
You say you will cherish me.
MIKE
You'll honor me.
Nobody else will have your heart.
JENNY
No one will have you but me.
You say you will care for me.
MIKE
You’ll stand by me.
You say that we will never part.
JENNY
No matter what.
JENNY & MIKE
Cross your heart.
MIKE
You say you will honor me.
JENNY
I cross my heart.
You say you will cherish me.
MIKE
I cross my heart.
You say you will stand by me.
JENNY
I cross my heart.
You say you will care for me.
MIKE
I cross my heart.
JENNY & MIKE
Ooo – oo – o – o – – oo – o – oo – oo – ooh.
Cross your heart.
I cross my heart.
The audience applauds. The lights go down. The curtain closes. End of Scene 6, ACT I.
